Here in my part of the world, we are gearing up for spring. I’m ready! Winter seemed longer than usual this year, and whether it’s my low tolerance for cold and gray, or whether it’s just my eagerness to see what will bloom — both literally and metaphorically — I’m looking forward to seeing what the upcoming season will bring.
Here are just a few things that I’ve been thinking about related to health these days.
What I’m Reading: I recently finished reading Eating Animals, by Jonathan Safran Foer. It was very thought-provoking. One thing that Jonathan pointed out was that the American Dietetic Association came out with a position long ago that a vegetarian diet can be healthier overall. He mentions that this isn’t publicized often, as it wouldn’t be good for the meat industry. The official position paper includes this: “A considerable body of scientific data suggests positive relationships between vegetarian diets and risk reduction for several chronic degenerative diseases and conditions, including obesity, coronary artery disease, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and some types of cancer.” You can read the full paper here.
Of course, keep in mind that the assumption here for good health is that folks are eating plants and real foods, not processed foods which may technically be vegetarian (think chips and candy). While our family wasn’t big on eating a lot of meat to start with — mostly due to the cost of finding the kind that isn’t full of junk– right now, I’m striving to eat fewer animal products overall as a result of my learning on this topic. This includes non-meat items such as dairy and eggs. I am noticing how it’s making me feel. Have you ever experimented with your animal product intake? If so, what were your observations?
World Health Issues: At the moment, I’m finding that more and more people are being mindful of their health habits due to what’s going on right now with the concern of the spread of illness. My family has been grateful that we live a lifestyle that has already had these things top of mind (i.e., not a day has gone by in my kiddo’s short life that I have not been heard asking everyone to PLEASE wash their hands before every meal and after every trip to the bathroom, and to use the ABC song to draw out the experience!). We feel fortunate. Some folks might be folding in these recommended health practices to their lives for the first time. What about you? What things are you noticing that you are trying to do for the first time on a regular basis? Or, is it business as usual at your home because you already practiced many of these recommendations? Do you think this experience is causing people to look at their regular health habits, or when this is all over, will it be forgotten?
Health and Tech: I’m getting ready to speak to my local Holistic Mom’s Network chapter about how technology is affecting everyone’s health. I plan to cover cell phone and tablet use as well as the impact of social media, video conferencing, and all kinds of other new ways to connect that have come about in the past decade or two.
